Service in the Community Week

Service in the community week

Service in the Community week gives interested students opportunities to learn about the needs of different communities outside of a classroom setting and to make connections with the people that they serve through hands-on experiences. Students are encouraged to identify and research the specific communities that they are interested in serving, and contribute ideas to the planning of the week.  You will find out more about the local or global issues particular organisations are helping to address, the needs of the people or causes they support and what each of us can do to help. You’ll be sharing this information with the RC community and helping to encourage others to get involved too!  The last day will be driven by the students and you will work together to plan a kindness project for the community.  Students will have the opportunity to reflect on their experiences and share their thoughts each day.

Last year, the week involved volunteering at the kennels of Sai Kung Stray Friends, meeting the founder of Impact HK and taking a Kindness Walk in the city to meet people experiencing homelessness and understand better the complex mix of factors that forces someone to become homeless and what we can do to help, and visiting Crossroads to get involved in their efforts to provide aid for relief and development.

This is a great opportunity for students who want to get out in the community and volunteer but aren’t sure where to start.  It could help you make a connection with an organisation or cause that you can go on to develop beyond CAS week.  You will be working with various groups of people (e.g. peers, elderly, refugees, special needs students, low-income families, street sleepers and etc.) under different circumstances that might challenge you to step out of your comfort zones.  Kindness, patience and an interest in helping others are a must! As is a willingness to learn about the needs of others and to contribute creatively to ideas and planning.

The cost will cover workshop fees, donations to the organisations we visit (as they need support and staffing to run visits and volunteering opportunities like this). It also includes the cost of transport to remote locations for some organisations.  For the more convenient locations, we will travel by public transport and this is not included in the cost. Students should also bring their own packed lunch and refreshments each day.

Location: Various places in Hong Kong.
