Nesbitt Centre

Assisting learners at the Nesbitt Centre

This is the best opportunity you will have in serving a part of the Hong Kong community that is often forgotten. Here you will learn how to relate and interact with those with moderate to profound disabilities.

The Nesbitt Centre provides an English-speaking educational programme for adults with severe learning disabilities. The Centre works towards helping members achieve independence, developing their own potential while seeking opportunities within the community.

You will be working with the physically and mentally disabled adults in a weeklong programme in the Centre, as well as around Hong Kong.  This is an opportunity for you to be involved in the many different aspects involved in working with the learners - from helping with classes in the centre in Sai Ying Pun, to life skills sessions at the residential site in Wan Chai, sports sessions at HKFC in Happy Valley, and visiting their social enterprises at The Nest and Cafe 8. In the main, you will be based at the Nesbitt Centre.

Students need to be mature and have good communication skills. Patience, understanding and a caring approach to working with others are key.

A mandatory orientation session will be held prior to CAS Week.

*Students who choose this placement will need to show proof of double dose vaccination at least 14 days before the commencement of the placement.

“After this experience at the Nesbitt Center, the three of us sincerely hope that one day the world can be both a safe and accepting place for all those with learning disabilities.” ~ Isaia Caluza
