Pottery on Peng Chau

Sunroom Studio: Pottery Workshop

In this five-day pottery workshop led by pottery artist Conrad Li, students will learn basic hand-building techniques and wheel-throwing techniques.

On the first day, students will be divided into two groups: Group A and Group B.

In the morning class, group A will be responsible for the hand-building pottery, and group B will focus on wheeling pottery. After lunch, the two groups will exchange their activities.

At the end of the 5-day workshop. Students will choose to keep five of their best works created during the week, and Sunroom Studio will glaze these works and send them back to you at school.

Day 1 - Coiling Technique: Roll the clay into a batch of round coils. The coil is arranged on a simple hump mold to form a pattern bowl. Wheel Throwing: Focus on centering and open hole technique.

Day 2 - Pinching Technique: Pinch a simple bowl form. Join the two bowls together to form a hollow clay ball. Combine slab and coil techniques to create clay owl.  Wheel Throwing: How to lift the clay wall and compress the bottom.

Day 3 - Slabbing Technique: Combine slabbing and pinching technique to make a mug or vase. Wheel Throwing: Create a bowl on the wheel.

Day 4 - Final Hand-built project: Combine coiling, slabbing and pinching techniques to create a clay house. Wheel Throwing: Create a cup on the wheel.

Day 5 - Students complete all the unfinished works and choose to keep five art works. Recycle the unwanted clay works and studio cleanup.

We will go for a group walk and eat lunch at one of the many places to eat in Peng Chau each day, for those who would like to.  Students can also bring their own lunch.

Each morning, students will need to gather at at Central Pier No. 6, and take the ferry to Peng Chau at 9:15 am. Activity leader Ms Lynx Chang will accompany students each day.

The current quoted price factors in the cost of a private bus from Renaissance College to Central Pier each morning.  This will depend on the transport needs of the group and the cost will reduce if a bus is not needed.

“Ceramic art has a direct and important function in our daily life. We can eat from it, drink from it, cook in it, use it for storage, or just display it to brighten our lives. We are in close contact with it at every moment and by holding a piece of ceramic art we can feel it with our heart, touch it with our passion, and appreciate its beauty, lifting our spirits in the process. The artwork displayed in this exhibition is made for this purpose.” ~ Conrad Li
