Bali, Indonesia.

Overview

Bali is an Indonesian island known for its forested volcanic mountains, iconic rice paddies, beaches and coral reefs. The island is home to religious sites such as cliffside Uluwatu Temple. To the south, the beachside city of Kuta is the main tourist hotspot, with Seminyak, Sanur and Nusa Dua all popular resort towns. The island is also known for its yoga and meditation retreats.

The Balinese people are an Austronesian ethnic group and nation native to the Indonesian island of Bali. Balinese culture is a mix of Balinese Hindu-Buddhist religion and Balinese customs. It is perhaps most known for its dance, drama and sculpture.

Our introduction  to Bali first occurs in the East in a location called Dausa. Mostly agricultural, local people look to the land for sustenance, support and future. Our relationship with Bali will be built upon by foundations laid by fellow alumni. An ongoing series of projects to support local farmers and their families; to earn a living by hosting minor tourism and immerse them into local culture and tradition.

The second phase of our experience shifts us to the south-westerly coastline and a world renowned surfing mecca! We will have the luxury of smooth long left-hander waves breaking on a sand shoreline. The location is epic with the beach on our doorstep. The requirements of surfing will ensure you are tested physically whilst the relentless wipeouts will stretch you mentally.

Embrace this opportunity to broaden your experience of life, to be part of something greater than yourself, be willing to give to strangers for the greater good as your life will be richer as a result.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Sunday 10th November 2019: We fly from HK Airport to Ngurah Rai International Airport (Denpasar) Bali.

Arrive late afternoon, transfer by coach to our location and home for the initial 3 days of our adventure. Side by Side Organic Farm, located in East Bali, SBSOF helps those in need to grow their own organic food and to educate their children. After a warm welcome and a local meal we get some well earned rest.

Monday 11th November 2019: Community! Ketut our local guide and new friend will guide us through the rice fields that leads to a walk through the traditional village of Dausa. We will ascent up 200 steps to one of the local village temples. From there, we will view the beautiful valley below thus giving you a better view of our location and the green rice fields that the farm is making their best effort to preserve. After this trek, we will be introduced to our group to the work to be done on the farm and provide information about tradition and Balinese culture. We will design and make cultural Balinese offerings and be treated to a traditional balinese dance performance in the evening by local villagers….. You might be required to join in too!

Tuesday 12th November 2019: Service! Focus will be centred at sustaining our relationship with the villagers and supporting the projects underway to improve the lives of its inhabitants. Our main focus will be in planting new crops (avocado trees) and using our manual dexterity in the repair work of kitchen worktops and tables and chairs used by the children of the village. Students will get the opportunity to educate our young hosts through a number of pre-planned teaching lessons. Afternoon will welcome a visit to the breathtaking Tirtagangga Water Palace, a must for all to see.

Wednesday 13th November 2019: The morning will be spent ensuring the commitment to our cause is complete. After a hearty breakfast and some goodbyes we will make our way to the International Surf School location at the Brown Sugar Surf camp,  http://brownsugarsurf.com/  The camp is located in Medewi, west Bali and is Bali’s one and only surf camp directly at the beach. With Medewi being approx. 75 km away from busy Kuta and its crowded surf spots, this idyllic fishing village still shows a glimpse of the true, authentic Bali. Surrounded by rice fields, mountains and pristine beaches our camp is a tranquil oasis in the heart of nature.

Thursday 14th November 2019: Action! Wax up those boards, apply your sunscreen as Balinese waters will soon put you through your paces. Whether you are a beginner or consider yourself a pro your needs will be catered for by a team of experienced surf guides. All local surf instructors speak English and literally grew up in Medewi’s waves. They really know the ocean like the back of their hands so they will always pick the best spot, according to conditions and your surfing skills. Groups are kept small to ensure there will always be a surf guide with you in the water to look after you and coach you.

Friday 15th November 2019: Time to hone your skills and possibly hit the big sets rolling in, out back! More surfing entwined with some local interaction with school children in the community. This day will be a combination of action, rest and recuperation. The aches and pains of surfing will be immediately laid to rest by a traditional Balinese massage; some chillaxing by the pool or through some well earned down time to sit, relax, reflect and contemplate over your experiences gained through this amazing experience.

Saturday 16th November: An early morning day break surf will be followed by a brisk departure back to the Ngurah Rai International airport for a somber trip home. The relations you create over the past few days will last forever and the first step in your journey of self realisation will have commenced as a result of your involvement in this adventure. The happiness of returning home to loved ones will be met with mixed emotions as you’ll long to return to this awesome place.

"True happiness is the satisfaction the you gain from giving a helping hand and serve the community. Every drop of sweat we sacrificed helped to build a new life for the Balinese Children; giving them a brighter future (East Bali Experiences)." ~ Jasmine Yeung

"The trip gave me the ability to gain a better knowledge and understanding of the world around us. An experience to see the world in different perspective." ~ Damien Chung

"The Bali trip to me was such a once in a lifetime opportunity, and getting to experience it with my friends and classmates made it that much more worthwhile. The strong immersion in the local Balinese culture taught me a lot that I hadn't thought about or come across before, and the constant availability of new experiences and encouragement to try new things was what made the trip so enjoyable. It was a great balance between interactive, hands-on service and learning, and the opportunity to try out a new activity." ~ Alison Murphy

“Instead of perfecting your own little planet, there's a whole universe outside waiting to be discovered: The activities in Bali will encourage you to step out of your comfort zone... P.S. Don't bring snacks to Bali, you'll regret eating them instead of Indonesian ones..." ~ Abigail Chu
